New (Old) Cartoon Released! A Blast from the Past...

Written and recorded in 2007, this was meant to be the second episode of Walk'n with Walken. Here we see the birth of the "friendship" between Walken and Newman.

The Randy Newman Incident was first conceived during the launch of Walk’n with Walken back in 2007. Two episode scripts with almost full recordings were made and never produced. This cartoon is the first of two unreleased episodes from the 2007 - 2009 series.

The goal of the project was to go back and pick something up I deemed too hard to produce at the time. That’s part of the reason this one never got made back then. Taking audio from 2007 and matching it up with today’s standards was fun. But I also decided on a style reminiscent of the old flash series, with the intent to create a fresh retro take. While the old series was made with Flash/Animate, I used Moho for this one.

This episode is different in that it wasn’t scripted. Typically Josh and I would write a script, agree on it then record audio. With this one, I went over to Josh’s house one summer evening in 2007 and we did the whole thing on the spot. Well, I say we, but it was Josh that made the characters come to life. I just recorded and archived the audio, where it sat for a decade and a half.

In 2018 when we did the new Walken World Series, I started working on what I coined the Vintage Collection, which would include the two lost episodes. But as priorities shifted I put this one down, just to pick it up again three years later.

So here we are! This was a total joy to animate. Which is funny because I dreaded doing it when we first recorded it. But there’s a very fun manic energy to this episode. Maybe not having a script allowed Josh to tap into some things, it’s hard to say. What I do know is: there’s no way I could replicate that energy today. It was very much a in the moment thing. A thing I luckily saved and now it’s here, finally complete.

I may produce the second lost episode. This one took a bit of work, especially with no written blueprint. So I may need a little recuperation time before jumping into that one. But damn, was this fun! I hope you enjoy this lost episode!
